Having first worked in oils and printmaking from the 1960s onward, Lajmi turned to watercolour much later in life, finding in it the immediacy that mirrored her own temperament.

The figures here echo what the artist once described as “composing a picture like a scene in a play.” The mirror, a motif she returned to throughout her practice, gestures toward the introspection that shaped her long engagement with psychoanalysis in the 1970s.

Across five decades of work, from her early association with the J.J. School of Art to her final years of painting in solitude, Lajmi transformed everyday relationships into quiet psychological tableaux. This late watercolour captures that synthesis — disciplined, intimate, and deeply human.
