Completed just a year before her passing, this late watercolour reflects Lalitha Lajmi’s enduring dialogue with theatre, memory, and selfhood. The mask — a recurring motif since the 1970s — returns here as both subject and symbol.

Watercolour had long become her most personal medium. As she once said, she painted “after dinner, from nine to two,” her body attuned to the rhythm of nocturnal creation. In these late works, Lajmi’s line grew gentler and her palette lighter.

A flower, a mask, and a faint figure in profile suggest the presence of both the living and the remembered — a fitting reflection of an artist who spent a lifetime translating emotion into form
