Lajmi often returned to the recurring motif of the mother and child — a subject drawn from life as much as memory.

Her daughter, filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi (1954–2018), was both muse and mirror — a constant emotional presence in her work. Their relationship, marked by deep creative kinship, often found expression through Lajmi’s intimate pairings of women, rendered in translucent layers of quiet empathy.

Here, the figures rest in still harmony, their forms almost merging. Painted a year before her daughter’s passing, the work stands as one of Lajmi’s most personal meditations on love, memory, and the enduring dialogue between two lives shaped by art.
