A self-taught painter who developed outside the academic modernist circle, Dipen Bose built a language that drew consciously from earlier Indian pictorial traditions—Jain manuscript detail, Kangra miniature rhythm, Far-Eastern contour—and later oil technique learned under Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury. Bose often returned instead to mythological and epic imagery, positioning himself apart from the dominant art discourse of his generation.

In this work depicting goddess Durga, one sees echoes of pata iconography. 

Bose held his first solo exhibition in 1955 at Artistry House, Calcutta; his work was later included in Lalit Kala Akademi exhibitions (1964), Birla Academy (1994), and Manifestations II by Delhi Art Gallery (2004). One of his paintings was formally presented by the Government of India to the President of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1953—an early acknowledgment of his distinctive position outside prevailing trends.
