Biswapati Maiti (b. 1947) belongs to the Bengal School’s later generation. Trained at the Government College of Art & Craft, Kolkata, where he later taught, Maiti is known for calm, figurative compositions rooted in observation, drawing and a distinctly Bengali sensitivity to posture, gesture and mood.

In this work, the sarangi player sits inside a long visual tradition in Bengal where musicians, street performers and artisanal vocations were recorded as lived culture. The sarangi, historically associated with classical and folk repertoires, becomes a cultural marker here: a reminder of the performer-based soundworld that shaped urban and rural Bengal through the 20th century.

Maiti held four solo exhibitions at Galerie 88 and his works today sit in collections including NGMA, Lalit Kala Akademi and Birla Academy of Art & Culture.
