A member of the Madras Group, M. Suriyamoorthy studied under the influence of K. C. S. Paniker and emerged as one of the most distinctive voices in post-Independence South Indian modernism. His practice bridged folk idioms and modernist drawing, drawing visual language from temple murals, kolam geometry, textile grids, ritual mark-making, and the earthy material culture of Tamil Nadu.
Suriyamoorthy’s mixed-media and folk-inflected works are widely known, but these portraits offer a different register — direct, pared back, and reliant only on line, eye, and the pressure of charcoal. Viewed together, these drawings offer a rare survey of his portrait technique.
