Sen often described how his early years in Bankura, steeped in clay craft, local song traditions, and the visual richness of Rarh culture shaped his imagination. This figure, likely a Baul or folk performer, channels that influence. By the 1950s, Sen had broken away from formal portraiture, developing a more expressive style that merged Cubist line with folk motifs. His experimentation with unconventional materials, colour layering, and dynamic form can be seen here.
