This drawing reflects Sunil Madhav Sen’s deep connection to the rural world of Bengal’s Rarh region. The standing couple, adorned with simple ornaments and beads, echoes the folk clay idols he first saw in Bankura while watching the sculptor Ananta Patua at work.
By the 1970s, Sen’s figures combined folk-inspired forms with a modern sensibility. The mask-like faces and flowing lines show how his early village memories merged with the ideas he explored through his study of European art.
