Art Deco style

1920-1930

This porcelain tea service, comprising a teapot, lidded sugar bowl, milk jug, four cups with saucers, and side plates, reflects the production of the Noritake Company during the interwar years. The decoration features parrots and cockatoos painted in enamel colours, perched among foliage, with bold turquoise borders paired with gilt rims and handles. The combination of vibrant hues, stylised natural motifs, and gilding situates the service within the Art Deco style.

Art Deco developed in France in the 1920s and spread during the 1930s. It was an age of ocean liners, jazz, and cinematic glamour, where strong colour contrasts and stylised motifs came to define modern living. Designers turned to exotic birds, tropical flora, and geometric forms to bring a sense of novelty and sophistication to everyday objects. In porcelain, bold borders and gilded accents captured the aesthetics of the period, aligning tea services with broader Art Deco design trends.
