A fine Victorian wall-mounted dial clock by E. J. Dent of London, housed in a circular mahogany case with a convex glass and painted dial. The dial is inscribed “E. J. Dent, London” and marked with bold Roman numerals, its hands of spade form.

Edward John Dent (1790–1853) was one of the most important English horologists of the 19th century, renowned for precision timekeeping. He apprenticed under Edward Gaudin and later worked with John Roger Arnold, gaining repute as a chronometer maker. In 1840, Dent founded E. J. Dent & Co., and his firm would go on to produce one of the most famous timepieces in the world: the Great Clock of Westminster (Big Ben), completed posthumously in 1859 under his stepson Frederick Dent.
