Two finely carved hardwood figures of Budai, better known as the Laughing Buddha, a figure deeply rooted in Chinese Buddhist tradition and popular culture. One is shown standing with a cloth sack over his shoulder and a pearl in hand, while the other sits in a relaxed pose, both rendered with the familiar rounded belly, joyous expression, and flowing robes accented with traces of red and green pigments.

Budai’s origins trace back to a wandering Chan monk of the 10th century, whose cloth sack was said to hold inexhaustible treasures. Over time, he came to be venerated as an incarnation of Maitreya, the future Buddha, and his cheerful, rotund form became a symbol of abundance, contentment, and good fortune. Rubbing his belly was believed to attract happiness and prosperity, and his image spread widely across East Asia, adorning temples, shrines, and homes.

The present examples, carved in richly patinated hardwood, capture Budai’s enduring appeal that made him one of the most beloved figures in the Chinese pantheon.
