This is the 1910 edition of Owen Jones' seminal work,  The Grammar of Ornament. Originally published in 1856, this work is considered one of the great monuments of Victorian colour printing and a cornerstone of decorative arts history.

Jones (1809–1874), a Welsh architect and design theorist, created this volume to provide designers and students with 112 richly detailed plates (originally chromolithographs) illustrating ornamental examples from 20 distinct styles and cultures, including: Savage Tribes, Egyptian, Greek, Byzantine, Moresque (from the Alhambra), Persian, Indian, Chinese, Celtic, and Renaissance.

The book is not merely a collection of patterns; it lays out 37 fundamental design propositions (principles) that Jones believed governed the arrangement of form and colour, advocating for design based on nature and historical precedent. The 1910 edition, published by Bernard Quaritch, is a highly regarded later printing of this indispensable design reference.
