Hand-Coloured Topographical Prints

A group of three prints from Capt. George Powell Thomas celebrated the series Views of Simla, published in 1846. The set comprises the following views: View from Colonel Chadwicks House (view no. 6), View from the House Called the Eagle's Nest (view no. 9), and View from the Chor (view no. 16). Together, the works present a varied visual survey of Simla and its surrounding Himalayan landscape, captured from prominent vantage points during the towns early development as a colonial hill station. Each composition combines expansive panoramic scenery with carefully placed staffage figures, reflecting the picturesque tradition favoured by British artists documenting India in the mid-19th century. The atmospheric rendering of distant mountain ranges, wooded slopes, and winding paths provides both topographical interest and a sense of scale and daily life. The group constitutes part of one of the earliest published visual records of Simla and is of particular interest for collectors of colonial-era Indian views and travel imagery. All three prints retain their original margins and period inscriptions on the verso, with condition consistent with age and handling.
