Ramendranath Chakravorty was a foundational figure in the development of Indian printmaking and a key force in reshaping visual pedagogy and artistic modernism in mid-20th-century India. Trained at the Government School of Art, Calcutta, and later at Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan, under Nandalal Bose, Chakravorty immersed himself in both classical and modernist idioms. He was among the earliest Indian artists to experiment extensively with etching, woodcut, drypoint, and aquatint—media that would come to define his legacy.

After a pivotal period of study at the Slade School of Art, London (1937–39), where he trained under Eric Gill and William Palmer Robins, Chakravorty returned to Calcutta and played a leading role in curricular transformation at the Government School of Art. As Head Assistant Teacher and later Principal (from 1949), he oversaw its elevation to a college and introduced an expanded syllabus integrating European-style fine art, Indian painting, applied arts, and sculpture. Crucially, he consolidated the formerly separate disciplines of lithography, wood engraving, and etching into a comprehensive Graphic Art department—laying the groundwork for the rise of modern Indian printmaking.

Winter Morning by the Ganges (1941) exemplifies Chakravorty’s delicate draughtsmanship and his shift toward portraying the rhythms of ordinary Indian life. It belongs to a period when Chakravorty was actively encouraging students to move away from revivalist and mythological tropes and instead depict the everyday—fisherfolk, scavengers, paddy-pounders, the working poor.

This work is especially significant in its alignment with the institutional and ideological shifts Chakravorty championed. His emphasis on realism, community subjects, and modern graphic processes positioned him as a bridge between Bengal’s revivalist past and India’s post-Independence modernity.

Winter Morning by the Ganges stands as both a luminous standalone work and a testament to the cultural and pedagogical transformation unfolding in Bengal’s art institutions in the 1940s.
