Manish Nai was born in Mumbai into a family engaged in the jute trade, a background that has had a lasting influence on his artistic practice. He trained at the L. S. Raheja School of Art, Mumbai, and emerged in the early 2000s as part of a generation of Indian artists, engaging abstraction through material process rather than painterly gesture. Working primarily with jute, cloth, newspaper, and other discarded or utilitarian materials, Nai developed a language rooted in compression, binding, and physical transformation.

His practice is closely tied to the material realities of Mumbai’s urban and industrial environment. Nai has since represented India at international platforms, including the Shanghai Biennale, and has exhibited widely in India and abroad.
