The Rococo style, first flourishing in 18th-century France under Louis XV, was revived across Europe and America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as part of a broader fascination with aristocratic elegance and romanticised courtly life. Porcelain factories in Germany, Austria, and later the United States produced richly decorated plates and cabinet pieces inspired by this taste, often combining modern transfer-printing techniques with hand-applied enamels and lavish gilding. This set of porcelain plates exemplifies the Rococo Revival aesthetic. The central reserve depicts a finely printed and tinted pastoral courtship scene: a lady is accompanied by her suitor and attendant, framed within a landscape of trees and opulent garden architecture. Upon the greens she dances to the lilting flute of her attendant, her lover’s gaze fixed in adoration; in another scene, he kneels before her, professing his devotion in tender verse. The cobalt-blue border is overlaid with scrolling gilt decoration in 22-karat gold, applied in repeating feather and medallion motifs.
